Hey, in the next week I'm planning to GTFO. I will... 1. Do this: zachleat.com/web/tweetback/ 2. Do something with my account here, not sure what yet 3. Delete this app 4. Fully embrace my @pepopowitz@hachyderm.io 🦣 account I'll keep stevenhicks.me/where updated.

One of my favorite things about software development is taking big problems and breaking them down into smaller ones. I've never had as fine an example of this as a project I recently finished working on, so I wrote about it: stevenhicks.me/blog/2022/11/breaking-problems-down-a-case-study/

99% sure I scheduled a tweet for this morning, and it didn't show up, so I think that's one of the robots that guy unplugged.

We must be approaching winter, cuz I wrote an article (1st one since May!): stevenhicks.me/blog/2022/11/automating-pull-requests/ TL;DR I had a bunch of repetitive PRs to open. Rather than suffer like a cave person I automated as much as I could. Along the way I learned more about sed and the GitHub CLI.

what if the real treasure is the 1000 poorly batched RPC calls we made along the way?

Working in isolation is fun because you get to move fast But then you want to do something really dumb, and there's no one around to tell you that it's really dumb, so you end up doing it and IMMEDIATELY realizing how dumb it was.

I'm still not sure if I'll be abandoning this place, but I scooped up @pepopowitz@hachyderm.io. For a bit I'll be spending a little more time there and a little less time here. Regardless, I'll keep this page updated: stevenhicks.me/where/

You would be a *teammate* of mine, if that's something that interests you. Like we could hang out and pair program and stuff. @MissAmaraKay/1588594247707475968

Luke warm take (maybe room temperature): Virtual tech conferences failed because speakers talking at audiences is an entirely bad format. In-person tech conferences succeed *despite* speakers talking at audiences, because the conversations and connection carry it.

I diiiidddd ittttt, I finally shipped it. You should listen to it! @ADevExPodcast/1584911658534723591

My keyboard was dropping keystrokes. I tried two new pair of batteries. No luck. If it's not batteries, it means something is interfering. I walked around unplugging things. It was my dehumidifier, in the "full bucket" state. I emptied the bucket. My keyboard works now.

Why did the developer spend their day learning how to run a static website (plus .htaccess) through apache via docker? BECAUSE THEIR REWRITE RULE WAS MISSING A LEADING SLASH. Not a joke, just my life. 😭😭😭😭

if you've been thinking "I wish I could hear more of Steve's nasally voice" I have a gift for you. I recorded some conversations last winter with people about the systems that work (& don't work) for them. I'm *finally* sharing them. First episode ships in a couple weeks! @ADevExPodcast/1579834957509246976

This is a great episode. Maybe it especially resonated with me because I'm having trouble starting my Monday morning 😬😅 but also it features some of my favorite people and they're very thoughtful. @ArtsyOpenSource/1575487425719062530

I said this the last time I installed a garage door opener, but I mean it this time: Yes, you *can* install your own garage door opener. No, you do not *want* to.

unimportant thing that bothers me way more than I'd like to admit: GitHub issues URL: github.com/xxx/issues plural GH pulls URL: github.com/xxx/pulls plural GH single issue URL: github.com/xxx/issues/123 plural GH single pull URL : github.com/xx/pull/123 singular 🤬

Thus begins a five day vacation to drive to Michigan and race 70.3 miles, and I'm starting it off the right way -- finding out the garage door opener is busted and needs to be replaced. Not today, Satan. Not today.

Ummm this lake is connected by a large channel to the one I swim in every summer, so (a) I'll never be sleeping again and (b) open water swimming in an unknown lake this weekend is going to be terrifying 😬😰 reddit.com/r/AbsoluteUnits/comments/x5mcov/this_snapping_turtle_found_washed_up_on_the_beach

😅😬 classic Steve energy on my #FirstPullRequest -- I got excited about an idea for 10 days, opened a PR for a small change, got feedback to make some changes, and then lost steam. github.com/flot/flot/pull/1105 firstpr.me "Contributing" to open source for 9 years🙄

Help! I have a repo with a precommit hook set up via husky. It runs prettier to auto-format changes before committing. It doesn't run when a commit is made through the GitHub UI. Does anyone know if there is a way to MAKE it run for commits made via GitHub UI?
-
oh hi, I wrote about how I'm using git conditional includes to use different emails to sign commits based on the repo's working directory -- stevenhicks.me/blog/2022/05/select-email-for-git-commits-based-on-current-directory/

Can we all just agree that "dependending" is an acceptable spelling variation of "depending"? I don't know why my muscle memory spits that out every single time.

Oh hey for all 8005488 times you've heard me say "to solve the problem, break it down smaller," I spent my morning getting really anxious that I couldn't solve my current problem, and finally made progress after I BROKE THE PROBLEM DOWN SMALLER. 😅😬

After a full day of not losing bluetooth audio, I can say confidently that disabling "AirPlay Receiver" in the settings has fixed my last two work macbooks. Both would drop bluetooth audio for a few seconds 20 times a day, and both were fixed this way: reddit.com/r/MacOSBeta/comments/qjgqjx/i_think_ive_found_a_fix_for_the_bluetooth/
