@shripad_krishna @ryanflorence Seconding the importance of specifying a canonical. We noindex'ed the old versions of docs.camunda.org without also specifying a canonical. Result: half the docs became un-findable because Google chose as the canonical a version we had told it not to index.

@shripad_krishna @ryanflorence Re: old docs that don't have a newer canonical, for our site I'm planning to let the canonical result in a 404. What I'm reading is that crawlers will likely just ignore that hint in that scenario, and choose their own canonical anyway.

@shripad_krishna @ryanflorence And worst case, if those older pages fall down the rankings a bit, we're willing to accept that as a nudge for people to upgrade. (I recognize that might be very different for you so I wanted to call that out as a sacrifice we're willing to make.)
