      @nmeans Everything about this story smells like "a typical software project." Deciding what the end-users did or didn't need to know about, taking shortcuts to fit things under budget, a project being sold without feature X but probably needing feature X... My question:

    @nmeans Are these pressures new to the aircraft industry? And we need to be worried that air travel's safety record is due for a bad stretch, as software-style shortcuts become commonplace? Or have they always been there, and we're just lucky this kind of thing doesn't happen more?

      @nmeans (Maybe "luck" isn't the right word - more like the systems in place overwhelmingly protect us, and this one just snuck through.)
